Recently Discovered Photographs reminds us of WW2 RAF “Black Friday” Operation.

Two National papers, the Mail on Line and the Mirror online, could not help but report the story of a dark day for the RAF during WW2, told through the recently discovered logbook and photographs of Flying Officer Robert Field, a Beaufighter pilot of 144 Squadron, who on the 9th February 1945 was briefed for an anti shipping strike in a Norwegian Fjord. The RAF Beufigthers, escorted by Mustang Fighter aircraft, found their target and attacked; amazing camera gun photographs show the ships under attack from cannon and rocket fire. The ships were tougher than they looked and a strong Luftwaffe presence resulted in 9 Beaufighters being shot down, with others badly damaged and only just getting home. The aircrew nicknamed this day “Black Friday”. Flying Officer Field log book entry for the operation reads  'Intensive flak and enemy fighters, 9 Beaus lost. Very Enjoyable.'
Surviving the raid unscratched and the war he continued in the RAF in the early post war years.
